WC07 - "Inside The Sun"

Air Date: March 14, 2000

Hosted by Paul Mortfield

inside sun

This will be a very special show targeted for the senior grades 9-12, showing how scientists can look and listen inside the sun. Imagine trying to peek into something that is so far away, and too hot to get close to. Solar scientists have devised a unique method of doing this difficult task using the SOHO spacecraft parked 1 million miles from Earth.

Solar Astronomer Dr. Todd Hoeksema, from the Solar Oscillation Investigation team at Stanford University in California will be on hand to show how scientists do this work in the field of helioseismology. There will be demonstrations on sound waves and Dr. Hoeksema will answer students questions from the chatroom. There are no formal classroom activities or curriculum associated with this show.
