Special Projects | Scavenger Hunt

The following students have completed activities inspired by our site. We congratulate you all on your accomplishments!

Alexander Vara

Coral Gables, FL, Nov 1998

I am doing a Science fair project on the sun. I would like any information you may have on how sunspots effect electromagnetism on earth. I am building a homemade magnetometer. I will use my Questar telescope (with solar filter) and your daily sunspot images from the SOHO/MDI Magnetogram to compare results.

Alexander took first place with his project. Congratulations!

Kevin Unterreiner

Woodmore Elementary School, Maryland, May 1998

Kevin Unterreiner, a 6th grader, won both his school's and the Prince Georges Science Fair by determining solar rotation using SOHO data from the web.

Outstanding job, Kevin!

Maureen W.

Maureen, age 11, Feb 1998.

"I did my science fair project on the rotation of the sun. I downloaded 11 days worth of images and learned how to calculate angular velocity. The pictures were used on my display board and looked really good, especially the colored ones. The judges at my school really liked the project and I got an A on the presentation. I enjoyed doing it and learned alot."

Congratulations -- great job, Maureen!

Amy S.

Freshman, Castro Valley High School, May 1997

Computed the angular velocity and rotation rate of the Sun using SOI magnetograms collected over a period of 30 days. Earned Second Place in the school's Science Fair. Congratulations, Amy!!!
