Joshua Halts the Sun

"On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon." So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day."
Joshua 10:12-13

________

This miraculous account of Yahweh, the Judaic & later Christian god, stopping the movement of the Sun was the basis for the Catholic Church's refusal, in the 1600s, to acknowledge Galileo's proofs that the Earth went around the Sun. The Inquisiton panel argued that the Sun could not have been stopped if, indeed, it didn't travel around the Earth. It was not until 1992 that the Catholic Church exonerated Galileo for his beliefs.
