22 October 2007

The closing ceremony of the 3-day long World Space Week 2007 program, marked by EARTHSPACE Resources Foundation in Nigeria, was a resounding success. The foundation also formally launched the youth club called Young EARTHSPACE Scientists, YESS!, founded and directed by Nigerian space scientist Ayodele Faiyetole.

Even in a short notice, they had five (5) high schools principals attending, and also the Zonal Coordinator of Education in Ogun State, representing the Commissioner. They made glowing remarks about the program.

If you can watch the African Independent Television, AIT (also in the US and on Satellite) program between 4-6pm today [11 Oct] Nigerian time, you would hear news on their program, and see some videos also. [The production was rebroadcast on 20 Oct.] Their education correspondent came to cover this program. It was terrific.

Dear all,

I have attached the pictures of the three (SIDs) with me.

This picture is taken at IGS, Ota, just after the WSW 07/YESS! fisrt day program.

We had a SPACE VIDEO SHOW today --- between 12.30 noon to 3.30pm. It was fun. We had three additional schools present, including former President Obasanjo's school, The Bells Schools, Ota!

Tomorrow, there will be demosntration of the SID installation and data use. Unfortunately, the computer we installed the IGS SID on crashed! I hope to use my laptop for it tomorrow.

On wednesday, we should round off with SID donation, and YESS! inauguration.

Hope you are all doing well.

Dear Deborah,

I write to find out about the best site to install the Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID) Monitor.

As you may recall, the IHY-Nigeria Education and Public Outreach unit successfully, organised two outreach programmes to schools, in the States of Lagos (Lagos State Junior Model College, Ojoo), and Ogun (Iganmode Grammar School, IGS, Ota), on April 12th, and May 15th, 2007, respectively.

The IHY-Nigeria EPO unit, with everybody in the loop, sent out a proposal to the Education ministry of Lagos State, for approval to do outreach programmes, collaboration, and sponsorship. But yet, not much has been achieved in terms of giving the official approval. Hence, we have not been able to install the SID in any of the schools in Lagos State (our supposed Pilot state).

Considering the fact that I have been highly mobile lately, I have not been able to continuously get data from the SID. Gathered data has earlier been sent, and others will be sent soonest. I am considering approaching Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, Ogun State, to instal the SID in their school. However, the Principal of Lagos Junior Model College, Ojoo wishes to have the equipment on their site, but I am not too supportive of this since they are under the Lagos State Ministry of Education, which we are still expecting approval from.

Find attached the pictures taken during the outreach programmes at these two sites.
