Subject: [NASA/IGES Review Results] The Fall 2010 NASA Science Education Product Review Electronic Results From: "John Ensworth" Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2011 16:45:20 -0500 To: CC: "Denise Smith" , , "Morgan Woroner" , Dear Deborah, Thank you for submitting the Spectrograph Educational Resources and the Space Weather Monitor ("SID") Project to the NASA science education product review. This independent peer review is helping to ensure that education products distributed by NASA are of high quality and meet rigorous standards. We appreciate your commitment to producing outstanding science education products and participating in the review. Attached are the review summaries for the products that you submitted to this fall’s review. At the end of this email is also a description of the information you’ll find in the review summaries (useful for interpreting the review results). These products received great ratings overall and the panel recommended them for distribution. Congratulations on producing excellent products! Products that pass the review will be identified as exemplary products and listed in DLESE and the upcoming NASA science education database (under development). If you have any questions about the review, please contact me. You can also visit http://nasareviews.strategies.org to see the evaluation forms, guidelines for products developers and other information about the review. Providing teachers and students with high-quality science education learning resources is an essential component in meeting the Agency’s mission to inspire the next generation of explorers. Thank you for helping to meet this challenge and for your continued commitment to NASA's science education goals. Final Review Recommendation – this section provides the final panel recommendation for the product. For products that do not pass the review, please note that this section identifies the specific areas where revisions are required in order to pass. In general, recommendations fall into the following categories: For products that pass the review: Recommended, Broad Distribution - these products do not need special training or introduction to use and are appropriate for broad distribution (e.g., at teacher conferences, over the Internet, at workshops, etc.) Recommended, Distribution through Teacher Workshops – these products are best distributed through a workshop or other opportunity to learn more about the topic or how to use this information/product for formal education. If your product is recommended for teacher workshop distribution, you will be invited to present your product during NASA Earth & Space Science Education Product training. This system provides training for NASA educators (including Space Science Broker/Facilitators, as well as education specialists from NASA Educator Resource Centers, NASA Explorer School coordinators, and AESP specialists) who conduct thousands of teacher workshops across the U.S. Recommended, Limited Audience – the panel believes the product is best suited for a specific audience. Typically this recommendation is made when a panel recommends a product for a higher, lower, or narrower education audience than the developer has identified (e.g., informal, rather than formal, education; smaller grade band – grades 5-8, rather than grades 5-12, etc.). Recommended, Revisions on Next Printing or Edition – the product has passed the review, however there are weaknesses and/or revisions that were identified by reviewers that the product developer is strongly encouraged to make on the next printing of the product or next edition. Products that need revisions before passing the review: Minor Revisions – Products needing minor revisions do not need to go back through the review process. After these products have been revised, the revisions just need to be verified by the appropriate NASA space science education forum representative. These contacts are listed at the end of this section. They may be re-submitted at any time. Medium Revisions – These products require more extensive revisions to pass the review than “minor” revisions. These products probably do not need to go through review and may be re-submitted to the appropriate NASA space science education forum representative at any time. The review summary indicates whether a product is required to go back through the review process. Major Revisions – These products are required to go back through the panel review process after they are revised. Other Occasionally the review results do not fit into one of the categories above. Some examples of these might include: material that is reviewed by more than one panel (e.g., in cases where material covers a broad topical area); material that is recommended for PR, rather than education purposes; etc. 2. Summary of Individual Reviews – This document represents a summary of the individual reviewer evaluations, prior to convening the panel as a group. Please note that the final panel recommendation, included in section 2 of the results, is the final determination for a product. As a result of the panel discussion and hearing other reviewer’s perspectives, individual reviewers may change their recommendations.
